Frieze Art Fair returns to Los Angeles from February 20-23, 2025 for its sixth edition, and in celebration of the annual event Stock Studio is presenting a collection of our woven sculptures at their studio in West Hollywood, on view for three weeks.
The installation features large-scale sculptural forms designed by Twenty One Tonnes and woven by our craft partners at the Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) in northern Ghana. Each one-of-a-kind piece combines undulating forms with traditional weaving techniques, creating dramatic sculptures that command attention.
These pieces are made from elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) which grows along rivers and streams throughout West Africa and is harvested in a way that promotes natural regrowth. Its long, sturdy fibers create lightweight yet robust structures, transformed through traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations. SWOPA works to preserve traditional craft knowledge while providing young women with marketable skills. Each sculpture represents both artistic innovation and cultural preservation.
While Frieze Los Angeles showcases galleries from around the world alongside installations, nonprofit collaborations, and local restaurant pop-ups, this exhibition at Stock Studio offers visitors a focused look at how sustainable materials and traditional craftsmanship can create powerful contemporary art.
