SUNHAT LIGHT | craft heritage reimagined for contemporary spaces

In an era where mass production often overshadows artisanal craftsmanship, our woven lighting offers a counterpoint to uniformity, bringing together centuries-old craft with contemporary design.

With its shallow conical form and warm materiality, our sunhat pendant light is quickly becoming one of our most popular pieces. This beautiful light fixture is especially well suited to dining areas as its classic shape draws the eye without overwhelming its surroundings.

The intersection of social responsibility and design

Made by the skilled artisans of the Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) in northern Ghana, each pendant is woven by hand from elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), a sustainable material prized for its structural integrity, rapid renewability, and minimal environmental impact.

The harvesting process itself reflects a deep understanding of environmental stewardship. Growing abundantly along West African waterways, the grass is collected using traditional methods that ensure regeneration. Each stem is pulled from its husk and left to seed naturally, creating a sustainable cycle of growth and harvest. The wet-harvested material is then sun-dried, preparing it for the intricate weaving process that follows.

Through SWOPA young women receive training in time-honored weaving techniques, ensuring that traditional skills continue to evolve and find new expression in modern contexts. This commitment to craft preservation, combined with sustainable material choices, positions our woven lighting collection at the intersection of social responsibility and design.

A classic shape that draws the eye without overwhelming its surroundings

The sunhat pendant's natural fibers create a lovely interplay between illumination and shadow, diffusing light through the organic weave to cast gentle patterns that bring warmth and dimension to a space.

We offer the opportunity to select your lightshade through in-person or virtual appointments. This ensures that the unique characteristics of your piece align with your space, as the slight nuances of handcrafted items mean that every pendant is unique.
