Dezeen features a coastal hotel peppered with our woven landslide pendant lights
California architecture studio Electric Bowery and graphic design firm Land have revitalized the 1980s Casa Loma hotel in Laguna Beach, drawing inspiration from European seaside inns and infusing the project with "Mallorcan vibes".
Situated on a cliff with stunning Pacific views, the renovation includes 70 rooms, various terraces, event spaces, and a double-height lobby featuring a bar. The design team focused on the area's rich history, from its Prohibition-era counterculture to its emergence as a haven for creatives and craftspeople.
The hotel showcases textural plaster walls and clay tiles, alongside a calming neutral color palette complemented by deep red-fired clay tiles and custom wood furniture. Electric Bowery's Lucia Bartholomew emphasized the importance of including pieces that highlight local and global craftsmanship, infusing organic shapes reminiscent of surfboards without being overly thematic. Guest rooms reflect this ethos with woven textiles and lighting, screen-printed tapestries, and natural stonework.
The design team used Twenty One Tonnes' hand-woven landslide pendant lights to enhance the hotel’s warm and inviting atmosphere. Each unique and organically shaped ceiling light provides illumination while embodying the theme of craftsmanship and echoeing the hotel’s design narrative. This integration of sustainable artistry elevates Casa Loma, making it a truly special retreat.
