INTRODUCING | The Brava Light

We can't wait to hear what you think of the newest addition to our lighting collection: the BRAVA LIGHT.

The playful form of our new BRAVA LIGHT was inspired by Gala and Salvador Dalí's surrealistic egg-topped house on the Costa Brava in northern Spain.

Many of the pieces that furnish it are second-hand, and thought to be sourced from dealers in the Spanish towns of La Bisbal d’Empordà and Olot. But little is known about this. It would be romantic to think of the home retrospectively as a collaborative effort across a shared and complex marital lifetime; in the same way Dalí would sometimes sign his paintings ‘Gala Salvador Dalí’. But it is more than possible.

There are many things in this wild and wonderful home that inspire, from the plaited rush matting on the floors and stairs, to the collection of folk art and antiques. But to us the rooftop eggs top the list!

THE PERFECT SHAPE

The egg has been called the perfect shape by mathematicians, who have long sought and only recently succeeded in discovering its formula. Artists have forever explored the egg's duality between hard exterior and soft interior, its evocation of female perfection, its analogy to birth and love.

The design world has also mined the beloved shape: a favorite of ours, Faye Toogood launched her Roly-Poly chair a decade ago whose voluptuous form was inspired by motherhood. According to Kitty Grady in an article for House & Garden UK, "Toogood follows in a long lineage of women artists – from Sarah Lucas to Barbara Hepworth, who have reclaimed the egg as a feminist symbol from macho male artists like Dalí."

A WOVEN EGG LIGHT

Our Brava Light is an oversized woven egg that strikes a balance between elegance and whimsy. Wired in Los Angeles as a flush mount ceiling light, it offers a sculptural form by day and casts a magical glow by night.

WOVEN BY HAND IN OAXACA

The Brava Light is woven by our artisan partners in Oaxaca, Mexico. Each piece is constructed from 'carrizo', a bamboo-like river reed that has been locally harvested and processed by hand by the Perez family who has worked with this material and honed their craft for 4 generations.
