MATERIAL

Jute (Corchorus olitorius) known as "golden fiber," is well known as a sustainable design material. Every part of this plant has a use in northern Ghana – its leaves provide local communities with nutritious vegetables, while its fibers create long-lasting biodegradable material that is perfect for producing woven pieces. The plant also excels at carbon sequestration and adapts well to varying climates.

Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) is a sustainable material prized for its structural integrity, rapid renewability, and minimal environmental impact. This grass grows along the banks of rivers, streams and swampy areas in Ghana and throughout West Africa. It grows, matures and tussles like wheat, with a broom-like flower at the top. To harvest the straw, each broom is pulled down from the husk and is left on the ground to grow into new tussles. The straw is harvested wet and then dried in the sun in preparation for the weaving process.
